Abstract

Myopia is a growing public health threat: by 2050 some 4.7 billion people — more than half the world’s population — are expected to be myopic, up from 2.8 billion today, with up to a billion of them highly myopic, beyond −5 dioptres. Beyond visual quality, high myopia raises the risk of glaucoma and retinal detachment.

Current myopia control solutions are not personalised and draw little on the individual mechanisms driving myopic progression. PREMYOM aims to bring myopia management into an era of personalisation: studying the clinical and biological drivers of progression, then designing ophthalmic solutions tailored to each individual. The goal is to establish a therapeutic reference for the personalised treatment of myopia.

The project brings together retinal mechanisms, a real-world cohort and numerical simulation. The prospective PREMYOM1000 cohort, launched by the Hôpital Fondation Adolphe de Rothschild, follows 1,000 patients aged 6 to 17 over five years at the Institut Français de la Myopie, combining full ophthalmic examinations with high-quality retinal and corneal imaging. These data feed the construction of a digital twin of the myopic eye.
